The Person I Was. The Person I Am.
The Person I Was. The Person I Am. (reacting vs responding)
I’m still me. I’ve just stopped reacting and started responding. I’ve realised there’s a big difference between reacting and responding.
Facebook Memories has a habit of introducing me to someone I know very well.
Me.
Sometimes I smile.
Sometimes I cringe.
Sometimes I wonder what on earth I was thinking.
More often than not, I’m simply reminded that I’m still the same person.
The difference isn’t who I am.
It’s how I respond.
The sarcasm’s still there.
The practicality is still there.
The curiosity is still there.
My instinct to solve things is still there.
The raised eyebrow is definitely still there. 🤨
I haven’t become someone else.
I’ve simply learnt that not everything deserves the same response.
I haven’t become someone else.
I’ve simply learnt that not everything deserves the same response.
And I think that’s because what I value has changed.
And I think that’s because what I value has changed.
I don’t chase everything.
I don’t need to win every argument.
I don’t mistake being busy for being productive.
I’m far more selective about where my energy goes.
It shows up in the smallest ways.
Years ago, I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about having a backup plan for the little things.
Now I do.
Not because I expect disaster.
Because I’ve learnt that removing small, predictable frustrations leaves more space for the things that actually matter.
It’s never really about the coffee, or the spare loo roll, or the emergency sachets in the cupboard.
It’s about creating a life with less avoidable friction.
A quieter life.
One where my energy is spent on the unexpected, not wasted on the predictable.
People often see the calm version of me.
What they don’t see is the thinking underneath.
My brain doesn’t race.
It wanders. It untangles. It joins seemingly unrelated dots before quietly arriving somewhere surprisingly simple.
It doesn’t always happen quickly.
It just… gets there.
And when something genuinely needs dealing with, that same brain changes gear completely.
Assess.
Prioritise.
Solve.
Move on.
No drama.
Just the next logical step.
The person I was and the person I am aren’t as different as they first appear.
I’m still me.
I’ve just stopped reacting and started responding.
And somewhere along the way…
I became more myself.
I think that’s what growing older has really given me.
Not different.
Just… edited.
